Founded in 1906, the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) was incorporated under the Animal Pedigree Act as the official registry of Thoroughbred horses in Canada. The CTHS (Alberta Division) and its membership are a major part of the agriculture community in Alberta – our goal is to ensure a viable future for our members by providing assistance and developing programs to ensure that future. Our mandate is to promote the purchase of Alberta Thoroughbreds, keep records, organize sales, disseminate information, compile statistics and assist our membership with registration.

Owners Awards:Yes, an Owners bonus award is paid to owners of horses of all ages foaled in Alberta placing win, place and show in all sanctioned races in Alberta having a minimum $9,000 purse and where entered at or above a minimum $6,250 Claiming price (to be invoiced by HBPA). The bonus will be paid after the conclusion of the Alberta racing season. Bonuses will not be paid for eligible races that have four (4) or less starters, the CTHS Sales Stakes, or Alberta Sires Stakes Races or races restricted to Alberta breds. Purse Supplement in Open Stakes Races:Alberta's thoroughbred horse racing industry is set for an exciting 2024 with a purse pool increase of over $1.2 Million in 2024 across all race categories. The average daily purse in 2024 is $119,000 per race day with Open Maiden Special Weight receiving a substantial boost to $25,000 from $20,000 working to bring closer to the $35,000 Alberta bred restricted maiden races. Offering an additional $1,000 for any condition carded that will be ran at a mile or over in 2024, to incentivize the running of longer races. Foal Incentive Program -New Mare Recruitment Program - Breeders with in-foal mares that have not foaled in Alberta in 2021 and 2022 will be eligible for $5,000. A payment of $3,000 will be paid upon delivering a live 2023 foal in Alberta with the submission of a Jockey Club Live Foal Report and a Breeder Declaration. Should that same mare produce an Alberta bred and sired live foal in 2024, the breeder will be eligible for a further $2,000 in 2024 with the submission of a Jockey Club Live Foal Report and a Breeder Declaration.
Maiden and Open Mare Breeding Incentive Program -Breeders who bred a maiden mare or a mare who was not bred in 2022, to a Stallion standing in Alberta for the 2023 breeding season with the intention of producing an Alberta Bred in 2024 will receive $2,500; $1,000 will be payable with confirmation of a 42 day or greater pregnancy by a registered vet and a declaration from the stallion owner. Breeders will receive the remaining $1,500 within 30 days of a live foal report filed with The Jockey Club resulting in an Alberta bred foal in 2024.

Stallion bonus will be paid proportionately to Stallion owners whose Stallions have eligible Alberta Thoroughbred progeny with earnings of $10,000 or greater during the Calendar year. Stallions must have stood in the province of Alberta for the entire Calendar year of conception for each year’s crop to be eligible.
