Dry Powder Gets First Stakes Win In Cathryn Sophia

Thoroughbred Daily News - Tue, 2025-08-19 18:24

Having previously done all of her racing in New York, Dry Powder shipped down to Parx to pick up her first stakes win in Tuesday's Cathryn Sophia Stakes. A head behind Sweet Seraphine (Quality Road) in the Wilton Stakes two back at Aqueduct, she stepped into the deep end and wound up third, albeit the length of the stretch back, in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks behind Scottish Lassie (McKinzie) at Saratoga July 19.

Given a 7-1 shot here, the daughter of Gun Runner showed speed but was outrun to her inside by Taliesin (Vekoma) and Fede (Adios Charlie) who shot out to lead. A comfortable third and clear along the outside, Dry Powder sat cozy into the far turn through the half in :46.78, took aim at the fading pacesetter and drove past to win decisively over closers Ourdaydreaminggirl and Disco Rules who both outran their long odds (18-1 and 16-1 respectively) to complete the trifecta.

The 44th stakes winner for Gun Runner, Dry Powder was a $525,000 KEESEP grad two years ago. She is out of Tell All, who sold for $240,000 with the winner in utero at the Pin Oak Stud Sale in 2021. Tell All herself is a half to MGSW Overheard (Macho Uno). And while she lost her 2025 Uncle Mo foal, she is due back next season to Horse of the Year Flightline.

Keeneland Issues Statement After Technical Difficulties with Ticket Sales for Fall Meet

Thoroughbred Daily News - Tue, 2025-08-19 17:34

Keeneland, in coordination with ticketing provider, Etix, issued the following statements regarding the technical difficulties experienced during Tuesday morning's Fall Meet ticket on-sale:

Statement from Etix:

“Earlier today, Tuesday, Aug. 19, tickets for the Keeneland Fall Meet went on sale on our platform. Unfortunately, an unexpected server issue created a strain on resources, resulting in errors and delays for many patrons attempting to purchase tickets. Etix values our long-standing partnership with Keeneland, and we extend our sincere apologies to Keeneland staff, patrons and the entire community for this disruption.”

Statement from Keeneland:

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this morning's ticketing issues. While the system was unstable, a limited number of customers were able to complete transactions, and those purchases are valid and will be fully honored. Keeneland made the decision to postpone the public ticket on-sale to Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 9 a.m. ET to ensure a reliable experience for all patrons. Etix has since enhanced their web servers and has assured us that they are prepared for tomorrow's on-sale. We greatly appreciate the patience and continued support of our fans.”

‘Rising Star’ Tip Top Thomas Gate To Wire In Smarty Jones

Thoroughbred Daily News - Tue, 2025-08-19 17:17

Tip Top Thomas burst onto the scene as a 2-year-old, earning a 'TDN Rising Star' badge at Saratoga in late August last season before running a game second to Chancer McPatrick (McKinzie) in the GI Champagne Stakes to cap his 2024 campaign. Shelved for most of the winter and spring, the son of Volatile return to the races at Keeneland with a fourth facing allowance horses in April before getting back in the winner's circle in his last two starts including a gate to wire track record-setting win in the GIII Indiana Derby last out going this distance at Horseshoe Indianapolis July 5.

The clear speed of this field and the popular wagering choice at 2-5, Tip Top Thomas set out to the early lead and stayed narrowly ahead of Fact who gave chase from second. Those two went one-two around the track with the favorite looking to put things away into the far turn and open up. And while it looked briefly as though Tip Top Thomas may run away with the race as he turned for home clearly in command, Fact made a race of it late, closing determinedly under Luis Saez to just miss by a head. Fellow 'Rising Star' Hypnus made up ground late to get into third.

One of three stakes winners for Volatile, Tip Top Thomas is out of the Consolidator mare Attempt to Name who was culled for just $10,000 at KEEJAN back in 2015 and has since produced fellow Smarty Jones Stakes winner Gray Attempt (Graydar) and GSP Dua (Arrogate) who brought $900,000 from Summer Wind at KEENOV last fall. The dam of seven winners from 10 to race, Attempt to Name has a 2-year-old Runhappy filly named Ames who has placed in two starts this year as well as a yearling Classic Empire filly who is her last reported foal.

Mural of Sunday Silence Planned for Main Street in Paris, Kentucky

Thoroughbred Daily News - Tue, 2025-08-19 16:14

A new mural celebrating Sunday Silence will soon adorn downtown Paris, Kentucky, joining the town's growing collection of large-scale public equine art. The mural is a project of the Legends of Bourbon County non-profit organization, in conjunction with Stone Farm, which raised and campaigned the 1989 Horse of the Year.

The artwork will depict Sunday Silence's iconic victory in the 1989 Kentucky Derby. It is being painted on the side of Hotel Thoroughbred, a new boutique hotel on Main Street that opens in Spring 2026.

Renowned artist Jaime Corum, known for her lifelike equine portraits, will create the mural. Corum has already contributed to the block's artistic landscape with large murals of fellow racing legends Curlin and Secretariat.

“When we were approached about having Sunday Silence celebrated and memorialized in this way, we were extremely honored,” said Staci Hancock of Stone Farm. “The mural has really captured the horse's essence, and it will pay tribute to him and Thoroughbred racing for generations to come.”

The finished piece will be dedicated on Sunday, Oct. 12 during the Legends of Bourbon County festival.

Nitrogen Will Go Next in the Spinster

Thoroughbred Daily News - Tue, 2025-08-19 13:47

Coming off an impressive victory in the GI Alabama S. at Saratoga, Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) will be tested against older horses in her next start. Co-owner Jon Green revealed Tuesday on his Rail Talk podcast that his star 3-year-old filly will go next in the GI Spinster on Oct. 5 at Keeneland.

“There are a number of factors that played into our decision,” Green told the TDN. “Number one, we wanted to give Nitrogen the proper amount of time. The Alabama took a lot out of her. The competition was tough. There were a couple of Grade I winners in there. There was also the distance and the heat. She's had to train in the heat over the last few weeks. All those things took a lot out of her. She gave every ounce of effort she had to win that race and we wanted to give her a little extra time between races.

“Number two, we feel like the Keeneland racetrack is probably more appropriate for her racing style. Mark (Casse) can have her down there three weeks before the race, train over that racetrack and then go right from her stall to the paddock, which I think is an advantage.

“Three, if we're good enough, there's a flight that goes to San Diego straight from Kentucky for the Breeders' Cup horses. That will make it easier to get her to the West Coast that way.

“Number four, and probably most importantly, we feel like it's the right distance and the right time in her career to take on older horses. Between the Spinster and the Breeders' Cup Distaff, we'll take two bites at the Grade I apple against older fillies and mares, which I think will improve her resume that much more. When you are going for an Eclipse Award you need to have all the boxes checked.”

The DJ Stable team has also made plans for GII Saratoga Special winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Ewing (Knicks Go). He is being pointed for the Oct. 4 GI Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland.

“He'll run in the Futurity opening weekend at Keeneland, as well,” Green said. “That was a recent change. We were pointing him for the Iroquois. We ran him back a couple of weeks after he broke his maiden. The race (in the Saratoga Special) against Obliteration absolutely took the starch out of him. We expect that, like Sandman, he's going to have an elongated campaign, so giving him the time now to have a break seems like the right thing to do.”

Cary Frommer to Serve as Judge at Virginia Yearling Futurity

Thoroughbred Daily News - Tue, 2025-08-19 13:37

The 24th Virginia Breeders Fund Yearling Futurity will be held this Sunday at the Warrenton Horse Show Grounds in Warrenton, Virginia with $40,000 in prize money at stake from four divisional classes.

Thoroughbred trainer and pinhooker Cary Frommer, who recently relocated back to Virginia from Aiken, South Carolina, will serve as Futurity Judge.

Frommer will select top yearlings from classes that include Virginia-Bred/Sired Fillies, Virginia-Bred/Sired Colts & Geldings, Virginia-Certified Fillies and Virginia-Certified Colts & Geldings.

All yearlings in the Futurity are automatically eligible to share in a percent of a $5,000 bonus which is awarded to top performers at the completion of their 3-year-old years, based on total earnings. Two bonuses are distributed–one for Virginia-Bred/Sired entrants and another for Virginia-Certified ones.

“I like a nice topline on a horse and sometimes horses grow into their toplines, so babies may not be there quite yet,” Frommer said. “I like to think I can see beyond that a little. I like them to be correct too but they don't have to be flawless. As long as they can run through any conformation flaws and they have fluidity, that's okay with me too.”

She added, “I'm looking forward to it. I enjoyed judging Maryland's before and I'm sure I will like Virginia's. It's what I do for a living–judging yearlings in order to buy them. I'm very comfortable doing it.”

CTBA Announces Incentives for California Breeders

Thoroughbred Daily News - Mon, 2025-08-18 19:15

In an effort to stimulate the California breeding industry, the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) unveiled several new breeding incentive programs Monday, highlighted by the 'Flagship Foal Incentive Program.'

With the CTBA awarding $1,000 for each foal registered as a Cal-bred, the Flagship Foal Incentive Program begins with foals of 2027 at a cap of 25 foals per breeder. Payments will be made upon the CTBA receiving a Cal-bred application and the registration papers from the Jockey Club, due Dec. 31 of the foal's yearling year.

In addition, the CTBA will waive Cal-bred registration fees for foals born from 2025-27 and will introduce a pilot program to increase the quality of broodmares brought into the state. Mares purchased in foal at out-of-state public auctions for $20,000 or more–and age 12 or under–will be eligible for up to $3,000 in transportation expense reimbursement. The mares must be bred back to a California stallion, with breeders limited to five mares per year.

“We are incredibly excited about these programs, which reflect our commitment to supporting our members and advancing California's Thoroughbred breeding industry,” said CTBA chairman Justin Oldfield. “With the changes we've seen in 2025, CTBA recognizes we are at a critical time for our industry. Our board was compelled to act and did so unanimously to support the needs of our breeders across the state, both in the north and the south. By investing in our breeders and enhancing the quality of our broodmares, we are building a stronger and more competitive future for California racing.”

For more information, contact the CTBA.

Blame Filly Hot and Dangerous Dominates From The Front In Ellis Maiden

Thoroughbred Daily News - Mon, 2025-08-18 17:42

9th-Ellis, $100,000, Msw, 8-18, 2yo, f, 1mT, 1:36.60, fm, 2 1/4 lengths.
HOT AND DANGEROUS (f, 2, Blame–Windfall Profit, by Malibu Moon) flattened out to be a fading fifth of seven in her 6 1/2-furlong bow over this main track July 14 but was nevertheless crunched into 6-5 favoritism in the second division of this juvenile fillies turf maiden.

Straight to the lead from the four hole, the $65,000 KEESEP purchase enjoyed a fairly carefree time of things up front while clear of her rivals through fractions of :25 flat and :49.95, reasonably comparable to the race six splits (:25.06, :50.58). Mario Gutierrez began to wind up the tempo fully three furlongs from home, and Hot and Dangerous covered her final quarter-mile in a strong :46.65 to score comfortably in a time that was 2.54 seconds quicker than the first division. Wathnan Racing's debuting Sneakily (Tapit), an $850,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling, raced last but one and would have been inconvenienced by the lack of pace, but–despite having to travel wide on the second turn–got her final half-mile in a race-best :46.16 in a promising effort.

A daughter of Hit It Rich (Smart Strike), a three-time graded winner on the grass at 11 and 12 furlongs, Windfall Profit was purchased by Craig Rounsefell's Boomer Bloodstock for $250,000 with this filly in utero at Keeneland November in 2022. The filly's third dam is Grade III winner Cuando Puede (Lord At War {Arg}), a half-sister to Honey Ryder (Lasting Approval), winner of the GI Flower Bowl Invitational and GI E.P. Taylor Stakes at a mile and quarter on the lawn and a gallant runner-up in the 2007 GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf in the bog-like conditions at Monmouth Park.

Windfall Profit's youngest offspring are a yearling colt by Liam's Map and a colt foal by Twirling Candy. She was covered by Oscar Performance this season. Sales history: $65,000 Ylg '24 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $63,231. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

Third Highest All-Sources Wagering in 166 Years for King’s Plate

Thoroughbred Daily News - Mon, 2025-08-18 16:50

With on-track handle the highest since prior to the pandemic, Saturday's 166th running of the King's Plate at Woodbine brought in over $4 million in wagering. Overall, the 13-race card generated over $17 million in all-sources wagering, which marked the third highest in event history. The Plate record, set in 2023, holds at $18.1 million. This year's card generated the highest dollars wagered per starter of any Plate program and debuted the new “Kings & Queens Pick-3” wager that offered a $5 minimum and 15 percent takeout.

“We were confident that Saturday would generate good numbers in large part due to a competitive King's Plate and a deep card of racing,” said Michael Copeland, CEO, Woodbine. “The action on the racetrack lived up to the billing and the atmosphere throughout the grandstand was electric. The King's Plate is truly the event of the summer and we want to thank our entire racing community for putting on a great show.”

Al and Bill Ulwelling's Mansetti (Collected) stormed to victory in the King's Plate, giving trainer Kevin Attard his third win in the race in the last four years. The winning rider, 20-year-old apprentice jockey Pietro Moran, is the third-youngest jockey to win the Plate.

Live racing continues at Woodbine Thursdays through Sundays until Dec. 14.
